Fahari Off the Grid is a Jamaican-fusion restaurant on Zanzibar’s south coast, in the village of Kizimkazi Mkunguni. We believe that food and travel connect people in the simplest and most meaningful ways. Our name fahari means “pride” in Kiswahili, and we take pride in offering exceptional food in a rustic, oceanfront setting where the sunset is always part of the experience.
Our kitchen is run by a small, dedicated team who create dishes that celebrate Jamaica, honour Zanzibar, and welcome travellers from all over the world. Our philosophy is simple: great meals don’t need frills or formality. They need flavour, hospitality, and a setting that takes your breath away.
Zanzibar is our home and heart, but our network stretches across Tanzania. We source from fishermen in Kizimkazi, farmers across Unguja, and women’s cooperatives like the Tufahamiane Group here in the village. By supporting small-scale producers, we ensure freshness on the plate and sustainability in the community.
By supporting these small-scale producers, we guarantee freshness on the plate and strengthen the fabric of the community while weaving in flavours from across the Caribbean. The result is food that tells a story of local roots and global inspiration, proving that a remote restaurant at the edge of Zanzibar can still connect cultures, continents, and people around a shared table.
“Off the Grid” is more than a name — it’s our way of life here in Kizimkazi. Being in a remote part of Zanzibar means limited infrastructure, so we’ve learned to turn challenges into opportunities. Instead of relying on excess, we embrace sustainability as the backbone of everything we do.
We conserve water through careful use and recycling systems, and we reduce waste by composting, reusing, and finding creative second lives for materials. Our kitchen makes use of the whole ingredient — seafood shells become stock, vegetable scraps enrich the soil, and leftovers are carefully managed so nothing goes to waste.
When you dine with us, you experience more than flavour. You’re taking part in a small example of how simple, conscious living can mean better taste, stronger community, and a lighter footprint on the planet.
